Greetings and congratulations on your impending retirement! The Coquitlam Retired Teachers’ Association (CRTA) invites you to join our Branch and the British Columbia Retired Teachers’ Association (BCRTA). Membership is always voluntary and is free for your first year. Eight hundred and twelve retired teachers from Coquitlam along with seventeen thousand provincial members welcome you.

The early days of retirement are a time of transition. There is time to reflect on a job well done and to enjoy opportunities for personal growth and satisfaction. The CRTA and BCTRA are here to support you throughout your retirement years. We are a non-partisan association that offers many benefits to members.  Please click here for more information and see BCRTA.ca for enrolment details and much more. We welcome your questions.

MEMBERS TEACHING WITHOUT INTERRUPTION INTO THEIR 70S

If you are a member who is turning 71 in 2022, please make sure to apply to the Teachers’ Pension Plan by November 1, 2022, for a pension effective date of December 1, 2022.

This is because, under the Income Tax Act, an employee aged 71 must start receiving their pension no later than December 1 of the same year they turn 71; however, they may continue working without interruption.  On December 1, their employer will stop deducting contributions to the Plan from the member’s pay; however, the employer may or may not inform the member of the requirement for them to start collecting their pension.

If you are aged 72 or older and are not collecting your pension from the Teachers’ Pension Plan.  You should contact the Teachers’ Pension Plan and apply immediately for your pension.  Their pension will be paid retroactively to December 1 in the year when you turned 71.
